Straight Golfers and BDSM-lite

Updated: Jun 5, 2019

I'm delighted to host Jen Silver #LetsWriteAboutSex!

Jen (she/her) lives in West Yorkshire, England with her wife. When not writing she enjoys archery, golf, and reading. She has nine novels published by Affinity Rainbow Publications. For the characters in Jen’s stories, life begins at forty, and older, as they continue to discover their appetites for adventure and romance.

Who is the most unlikely person who has read and appreciated your work, sex scenes included?

The most unlikely person to have read and appreciated my work is one of the older, married, straight woman I played golf with who, without any prompting from me, downloaded my first published novel and then told me how much she enjoyed it and how she would like to read the next one. I was also pleasantly surprised by my mother’s reaction to my ‘BDSM-lite’ book, Changing Perspectives. I was nervous about her reading it (she’s 90 this year) but her response was: “Might have skipped quickly over some parts but people are entitled to their pleasures.”

I think my older brother gave up after the first book and now just adds the latest one to a shelf, high up so his grandchildren can’t reach them.

And then there’s my wife. I’m always on tenterhooks when I’m in the same room and know she’s reading one of my books on Kindle. And, as with the aforementioned Changing Perspectives, I knew she wasn’t keen on the SM aspect so I was thrilled when she finished it and said she’d enjoyed the story.

I suppose this links to another question about whether or not I worry that people will assume I’m writing about my own sex life. So far no one has asked and if they do, I’ll probably just give them the Mona Lisa smile to keep them guessing.

#LetsWriteAboutSex is hosted by Karelia Stetz-Waters, English professor, latte aficionado, rose gardener, and lesbian romance writer.
